WordCamp Cape Town 2011 a big success

Atlantic Imbizo

WordCamp has come to an end and by all measures it was a great success. It was a day filled with insightful sessions by some very inspiring speakers and great networking and hobnobbing among WordCampers at a beautiful venue.

We had the opportunity to build new relationships, strengthen some old bonds and see some familiar faces while uniting in our passion for WordPress (The world’s leading open source CMS).

We’ll be wrapping up all the loose ends and posting the various videos and presentations in the coming weeks.

Videos and Photos

The video recordings of the sessions has gone to post-production and we will post the videos on this website as well as WordCamp.tv as soon as possible. Stay tuned to our Twitter and Facebook feed as we’ll announce their availability across those channels.

The photos taken at the event will be posted on our Facebook group soon. Be sure to tag your fellow WordCampers!

Presentations

The Speakers presentations and slides will be made available soon. We will post all the presentations here on our official site as part of our wrap up. Some Speakers have posted their presentations online on their own domains, so for those that just can’t wait, follow the #wcct hashtag on Twitter to see where they are posted.

Prizes

The remaining Prizes will be awarded during this week. Winners will be notified via email and a full list of winners will be posted here on the official site once all prizes have been awarded.

The “Why I love WordPress” Twitter competition winners are: @comradeteacosy and @amberbaldock. We will email you this week with details on how to access your prizes.

We want to thank everyone who sponsored, presented sessions, volunteered and attended this year’s WordCamp for coming together and making it a big success. It’s great to see that the love of WordPress is alive and well and that the dedication to WordPress is so strong in the South African community.

We had a great time, we trust that you all had a great time, and we’re definitely looking forward to seeing you all (and your friends) again next year for some more WordPress awesomeness.

Lessons in online publishing from Fred Roed

These days it is very hard to keep up with the deluge of new social media offerings. What’s the next big thing and how are online publishers meant to keep up.

In his discussion, “What a 60’s Rock n’ Roll Band Can Teach Us About Online Publishing”, Fred Roed highlighted the value of social media and the benefits of its community status. If publishers are creative in their cause and they offer content freely, this will almost always be enough to generate online conversation. Maybe then, publishers can focus on the technologies already working for them.

Fred highlights the value of:

  • Unique idiosyncrasies
  • Influential ambassadors
  • Free content, even if you are a e-Commerce venture
  • Having a cause
  • Stimulating conversation creatively
  • Content syndication

Thank you Fred, I enjoyed the session.

The “Why I love WordPress” competition

This year at WordCamp Cape Town we are very fortunate to have many prizes to give away. WordCamp attendees will be walking away with some fantastic giveaways, and we wanted to share the fun with the many that cannot attend.

We often hear people professing their love for WordPress. Talking about passion and love is easy, but at WordCamp Cape Town we want you to publicly proclaim your love for WordPress and tell the world how you feel and why you feel that way.

Why I love WordPress

We will be running the competition across three channels, each with it’s own character limit but asking you to answer the same basic question: Why do you love WordPress?
